Supermarkets are seeking hundreds of new and temporary workers to help in store.
Supermarkets are under an unprecedented amount of pressure at the moment to keep shelves stacked, essential supplies stocked and their customers’ needs met during the coronavirus pandemic.
With stores introducing new measures to prevent panic buying and ensure social distancing, online delivery services are struggling to keep up with demand.
With customers left unable to book delivery slots for necessary online shopping needs, supermarkets have been urgently recruiting new staff to help them during this time.
Supermarket Morrisons hired 3,500 new staff in the last few weeks to meet the soaring demand for home deliveries, Aldi aim to hire around 9,000 new staff members and supermarket chain Tesco had openings for 20,000 new workers.

Which supermarkets are hiring? Aldi jobs
Job seekers website Monster currently has 240 vacancies that need filling at Aldi, ranging from retail store assistants to Deputy Managers. The vacancies cover a wide number of regions in the UK, including London, the Midlands, Anglia, Yorkshire, stores in Wales, Scotland and more.
Totaljobs list 496 positions available at Aldi and you can also apply for a role at the company through their official recruitment website aldirecruitment.co.uk.
Tesco are looking for new workers who can start immediately in a range of full time and temporary roles.
Jobs available at Tesco range from customer assistants to delivery drivers depending on where in the country you are looking for a role.
There are nearly 500 live roles listed on Indeed.co.uk at the time of writing and most are looking for someone who can start immediately. You can also apply for jobs at Tesco through the Tesco careers website.

Sainsbury’s are calling out for people to join their workforce and help them ‘in feeding the nation.’
The supermarket chain is on the lookout for new fixed-term (similar to temporary) workers to help them during the pandemic.
The quickest and easiest way to enquire about a job at Sainsbury’s, according to the Sainsbury’s website is: ‘pop into your local store to find out the latest opportunities. Alternatively, if you know someone who already works at Sainsbury’s, please get in contact with them to find out about vacancies in your local area.’
Iceland have currently paused their recruitment for store workers due to demand for positions, but the supermarket chain is currently advertising over 150 delivery driver jobs around the UK that they are looking to fill quickly.

In response to the huge numbers of store worker applications they have received Iceland said: ‘We have received a huge response to help feed the nation. Therefore we have temporarily stopped all retail assistant recruitment to deal with the current waiting list. Thank you for wanting to Be Iceland.’

Morrisons are calling for people to join them: ‘in an hourly paid temp role across our logistics and manufacturing sites, and help us provide food for the nation during these difficult times.’
The supermarket chain is recruiting for a legion of temporary store roles, manufacturing and logistics roles around the UK.

While they don’t have any physical stores, online food delivery service Ocado are on the lookout for delivery drivers to join their fleet and help feed the nation during the coronavirus pandemic.
They are also recruiting for a range of business and managerial roles at the moment.

Asda are currently advertising over 50 different delivery driver and store roles in their supermarkets around the UK.
Most of the roles are part-time and the closing date for applications is 9 April 2020.

Like other supermarkets during this busy and uncertain time, Waitrose are also in need of temporary staffing agencies who can start soon.
On their website, Waitrose writes: ‘During this time of great uncertainty we’re wholeheartedly committed to ensuring we support our customers and therefore will be recruiting for temporary roles in Waitrose & Partners shops, our new Customer Fulfilment Centre in Enfield and our Waitrose & Partners Distribution sites. This is to support the unprecedented uplift in demand in this area of the Partnership. Please apply to any vacancies of interest and we will continue to review your applications as normal.’

Waitrose currently advertises roles in Scotland, Guernsey and in and around London.

Although Lidl have a variety of roles available in their teams both in-store and at management level, at this time the supermarket have announced that they are ‘prioritising applications for roles in stores and warehouses.’
‘Applications for other roles will be processed in due course, but please be mindful that there will be a delay. We will be avoiding physical interviews where possible and will be using digital alternatives in the interim.’
The supermarket is urgently recruiting for new stock assistants to help support their in-store teams, and are offering a minimum 4 week fixed term contract.

Co-op are not just recruiting for roles in their supermarkets at this time, but also for workers who could be places in their depots and funeral services.
In a special statement regarding recruitment during the Covid-19 outbreak, Co-op state on their website: ‘We’re focusing all our efforts on recruiting for jobs which will help us keep the country running at this difficult time – roles in our food stores, logistics depots and funeral homes.’
