A Day in the Life: What Your Role Entails

To give you a clearer picture of this rewarding career path, let's walk through a typical day for a Care Home Staff member in one of our partner homes in Chester CH1. Every day is different, but the core mission remains the same: enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Morning Shift (7:00 AM - 3:00 PM)

  • Handover & Planning: Receive a detailed briefing from the night team on any changes to resident needs or care plans.
  • Personal Care & Breakfast: Assist residents with waking, washing, dressing, and grooming, respecting their independence and choices. Support them to the dining room for a nutritious breakfast, aiding those who need help with eating.
  • Medication Rounds: Under supervision, administer morning medications, meticulously documenting each step.
  • Activities & Engagement: Facilitate morning activities—this could be a gentle exercise class, a reminiscence session, or one-to-one companionship in the garden.

Afternoon & Evening (2:00 PM - 10:00 PM)

  • Lunch & Hydration: Ensure residents enjoy their main meal, monitoring intake and offering encouragement. Promote fluid intake throughout the afternoon.
  • Meaningful Interaction: This is the heart of the role. You might read the newspaper with a resident, help them write a letter, or simply listen to their stories.
  • Evening Care & Handover: Support residents with evening routines—changing for bed, evening hygiene, and settling in. Provide a thorough, written handover to the oncoming night team, ensuring continuity of care.

"The small moments are what make it special. Seeing a resident's smile when they recognise a favourite song, or the comfort you can provide with a simple cup of tea and a chat—that's the real reward of this job." – Sarah, Care Assistant placed by StaffDirect in Chester.
