Role Details
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, schedules, and bar bending schedules to determine the type, size, and quantity of reinforcement steel required.
- Measure, cut, bend, and fabricate steel reinforcement bars (rebar) using appropriate tools and machinery, ensuring precision to meet specified tolerances.
- Accurately position and fix steel reinforcement into formwork for concrete pours, including foundations, walls, columns, beams, and floor slabs.
- Securely tie rebar using wire and pliers or mechanical tying tools, creating robust structures that will withstand the forces of poured concrete.
- Work collaboratively with other trades on site, including carpenters, concreters, and site managers, to ensure workflow efficiency.
- Rig, lift, and move heavy rebar cages and materials using appropriate manual handling techniques and site plant like cranes (with necessary signalling).
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work area, adhering strictly to all site-specific health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures, including wearing full PPE at all times.
- Conduct basic quality checks on your own work and that of assistants, ensuring it aligns with drawings before concrete pours.
- Proven Experience: Minimum of 2 years' recent experience as a Steel Fixer on UK construction sites, with references.
- Essential Certification: A valid CSCS Card (Skilled Worker or equivalent) is mandatory. A CPCS/NPORS card for operating relevant plant may be advantageous.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading structural drawings and bar bending schedules. Competent in using all hand tools (rebar benders, cutters, tying tools) and power tools associated with steel fixing.
- Physical Fitness: The role is physically demanding, requiring lifting, bending, and working at height or in all weather conditions. Must have good manual dexterity and stamina.
- Safety-First Mindset: An impeccable understanding and commitment to site safety. Certifications in SSSTS, SMSTS, or First Aid are highly desirable but not essential.
- Reliability: Punctual, reliable, and able to work effectively as part of a team under the pressure of project deadlines.
- Own Tools & PPE: Must have your own basic hand tools and steel-toe-capped safety boots. Other PPE may be site-provided.

Frequently Asked Questions: Steel Fixer Jobs
For this particular role in Lancaster LA1, the client requires a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience as a Steel Fixer on commercial or large-scale civil engineering projects in the UK. Experience with reinforced concrete structures, reading complex drawings, and working to tight deadlines is essential. Your CV should clearly detail the projects you've worked on, the types of structures (e.g., multi-storey car parks, foundations, retaining walls), and any specialist techniques you're familiar with.
This specific role requires a CSCS Skilled Worker card (often blue) for Steel Fixing. A Labourer card (green) is not sufficient as it does not demonstrate the qualified skill level the client needs. However, if you have extensive steel fixing experience but the wrong card, we advise you to upgrade your CSCS card as soon as possible. In the meantime, we may have other labouring or assistant roles where you can gain further site experience.
Yes, absolutely. One of our key benefits is weekly pay. You will submit your timesheet at the end of each week (usually via our online portal or app). Once approved by the site manager, our accounts team processes payment, and funds are typically in your bank account by the following Friday. All pay is through PAYE, meaning tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, and you accrue statutory holiday pay. We are completely transparent about your hourly rate before you start any assignment.
This role has strong temp-to-perm potential. The client is using a temporary contract to ensure they find the right fit for their team and the long-term project pipeline. For workers who demonstrate reliability, skill, and a good site attitude, the client often offers direct permanent employment. Even if this specific role doesn't convert, performing well on site through StaffDirect significantly increases your chances of being hired directly for future projects or being placed in another permanent role through our extensive network, much like the opportunities we see in sectors from maintenance to hospitality.
StaffDirect recruits for a huge variety of roles nationwide. Whether you're a Maintenance Technician in London E16, an Administrative Assistant in Chelmsford CM1, or a Nursery Nurse in Birmingham B46, we have dedicated teams for each sector.
