Job Description: Pharmacy Assistant / Technician Role in Wembley

StaffDirect is partnering with several established community pharmacies, retail chemists, and healthcare providers in the Wembley HA9 area to recruit dedicated Pharmacy Assistants and Technicians. This is a pivotal support role within a fast-paced healthcare environment, perfect for individuals seeking a rewarding career that makes a tangible difference to local community health. Whether you are a qualified Pharmacy Technician registered with the GPhC or an experienced Assistant looking for your next challenge, we have opportunities that match your skills and career aspirations.

As a trusted temporary staffing agency with deep roots in the local area, we understand the specific needs of Wembley's healthcare sector. Our clients range from busy high-street pharmacies to larger healthcare hubs, all requiring reliable, knowledgeable, and compliant staff. By applying through StaffDirect, you gain access to a wider network of potential employers than applying to individual job boards, significantly increasing your chances of securing the right role quickly. We handle the vetting, compliance checks, and negotiation, allowing you to focus on what you do best—providing exceptional pharmaceutical care.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

In this Pharmacy Assistant / Technician role, you will be an integral part of the pharmacy team. Your responsibilities will be varied and essential to smooth operations, ensuring patients receive accurate and timely service.

  • Dispensing & Prescription Management: Accurately assemble and label prescribed medications under the supervision of a Pharmacist. Manage the prescription workflow from receipt to collection, ensuring all legal and safety protocols are followed.
  • Patient Service & Counselling: Provide courteous, confidential service to patients at the counter. Offer advice on over-the-counter (OTC) products, healthy living, and minor ailments, referring complex queries to the Pharmacist.
  • Stock Control & Inventory: Conduct regular stock checks, place orders with suppliers, and ensure the correct storage of medicines (including controlled drugs). Manage expiry dates and minimise waste.
  • Administrative Support: Handle telephone enquiries, process NHS paperwork, maintain patient records, and support the day-to-day administrative functions of the pharmacy. This aspect of the role shares similarities with an Admin Assistant position but within a highly regulated healthcare context.
  • Compliance & Hygiene: Maintain impeccable standards of cleanliness in the dispensary and retail area. Adhere strictly to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), GDPR, and GPhC guidelines to ensure patient safety and data security.

Essential Requirements & Qualifications

To be successful in this role and to ensure the safety of patients, candidates must meet certain criteria. We are looking for individuals who are not only qualified but also possess the right attitude and commitment.

  • Experience & Qualifications: For Technician roles, you must be a GPhC-registered Pharmacy Technician. For Assistant roles, an NVQ Level 2/3 in Pharmacy Services or significant proven experience in a UK pharmacy setting is essential.
  • Product & Legal Knowledge: A strong working knowledge of common medicines, OTC products, and the legal framework governing pharmacy practice (including the Medicines Act).
  • Accuracy & Attention to Detail: Exceptional numerical and literacy skills with a zero-tolerance for errors. Dispensing requires pinpoint accuracy.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with patients, doctors, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. You must be a reliable team player.
  • Organisation & Initiative: The ability to prioritise a busy workload, work under pressure, and use your initiative to solve problems while knowing when to seek guidance.

Note: All successful candidates will be subject to a full DBS check and employment reference verification as part of our commitment to safe recruitment, a process detailed in our candidate screening guide.

Yes, absolutely. Working in a pharmacy involves access to sensitive patient information and controlled medicines. An enhanced DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) is a mandatory requirement for all pharmacy staff. If you have a current, portable DBS certificate registered with the Update Service, we can verify it quickly. If not, we will guide you through the application process. The cost is typically covered by the agency or employer for long-term placements.

Definitely. Many of our temporary pharmacy placements are"temp-to-perm," meaning the employer uses the temporary period to assess your fit for a permanent vacancy. Performing well as a temp is one of the most effective ways to secure a permanent position. Furthermore, working in different pharmacy settings (retail, hospital, clinic) through an agency like StaffDirect broadens your experience, making you a more attractive candidate for senior Pharmacy Technician or supervisory roles in the future.

We also encourage and can provide information on further training. For instance, a Pharmacy Assistant can progress to become a Technician via an apprenticeship or distance learning course. Explore our resources on career growth strategies for more insights.

Yes, flexible working is a key advantage of working with a staffing agency. Pharmacies require cover for various shifts: early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. This creates a high demand for part-time and flexible workers. Whether you're a student, a parent, or someone seeking to supplement your income, we have shifts to suit your availability.
