Job Description

StaffDirect is actively seeking a dedicated and proactive Learning Support Assistant for an immediate, temporary-to-permanent role within a dynamic educational setting in the heart of London EC2. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a supportive school community where you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the learning experience for students with a range of needs. Our client is a well-regarded institution committed to inclusive education, and they require a compassionate individual to start as soon as possible. As a leading temporary staffing agency with deep roots in the capital, we specialise in connecting talented education professionals with rewarding positions that offer both flexibility and career progression.

This role is perfect for someone who is passionate about making a tangible difference in young people's lives. You will be working closely with teachers and other support staff to create a positive and accessible learning environment. Whether you are looking for a long-term career in education or a flexible role that fits around your other commitments, this position offers a valuable foot in the door with a reputable London school. By applying through StaffDirect, you gain access to our extensive network of schools and colleges across London EC2 and beyond, ensuring you are first in line for not only this role but also future opportunities in nursery nursing, care assistance, and other supportive educational positions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to pupils with special educational needs (SEN), including those with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, and dyslexia, ensuring they can access the curriculum effectively.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in preparing learning materials and adapting resources to meet the individual needs of students, fostering an inclusive classroom atmosphere.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, providing constructive feedback to teachers and contributing to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and annual review meetings.
  • Support pupils' social and emotional development, promoting positive behaviour and helping to manage any challenges that arise during the school day.
  • Supervise pupils during non-lesson times, such as breaks and lunchtimes, and may provide personal care assistance where necessary, always adhering to safeguarding policies.

What We're Looking For

  • Previous experience as a Learning Support Assistant, Teaching Assistant, or in a similar child-focused role is highly desirable. Relevant volunteer work will also be considered.
  • A genuine passion for education and supporting young people, coupled with patience, empathy, resilience, and excellent communication skills.
  • A good understanding of SEN and the ability to implement strategies to support learning and development. Training in Team-Teach, Makaton, or PECS is a significant advantage.
  • You must have an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or be willing to apply for one immediately through StaffDirect. The right to work in the UK is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I start this Learning Support Assistant job in London EC2?

We are recruiting for an ASAP start. Once you apply, our team will move quickly. If you have a current DBS on the Update Service and your references are readily available, you could potentially be in the school within a week. For those needing a new DBS, the process typically takes 7-14 days, which we expedite as much as possible.

Do I need prior experience as a Learning Support Assistant to apply?

While prior experience is highly desirable, we also consider applicants with transferable skills from roles in care, youth work, or coaching. A genuine passion for supporting children and a willingness to learn are crucial. We can guide you on how to frame your existing experience for an education setting.

What is the difference between temp and temp-to-perm?

A temporary (temp) role has a fixed end date or is ongoing but without a permanent contract. Temp-to-perm means you start on a temporary basis with the clear intention from the school to offer you a permanent contract after a successful trial period, usually 12-16 weeks. This role is advertised as temp-to-perm possible. For more on this, see our insights on jobs through temp agencies.

Will I only be considered for this one role in EC2?

No. When you register with StaffDirect, you become part of our candidate pool for the entire London region. Even if this specific role is filled, we will proactively match you with other suitable Learning Support Assistant vacancies in EC2, neighbouring boroughs, and beyond. We also recruit for Event Staff, Sales Assistant, and Temporary Chef positions if your skills are diverse.

How does weekly pay work with a recruitment agency?

You will submit your timesheet to StaffDirect at the end of each working week. We verify the hours with the school and then process your payment, which is typically in your bank account by the following Friday. Your pay slip will clearly show your hourly rate, hours worked, and any holiday pay accrued.
