A Day in the Life: Inside the Leeds Logistics Hub
To truly understand the impact of a Stock Replenishment Assistant, it helps to follow a typical shift. This role is the vital link between bulk storage and order fulfilment, ensuring the entire operation runs without a hitch.
Shift Start & System Check
The shift begins with a team briefing from the supervisor, covering daily targets and any priority stock lines. You then log into the handheld Warehouse Management System (WMS) terminal to review the first wave of replenishment tasks. The system intelligently generates a pick path, directing you to the reserve locations where stock is most urgently needed on the forward pick faces.
Proactive Stock Movement
Using a powered pallet truck or reach truck (if licenced), you collect full pallets from the high-bay storage area. You scan each pallet and its destination location, confirming the system transaction. A key part of the role is visual checks—ensuring labels match, packaging is intact, and expiry dates are valid for food or pharmaceutical items before moving stock to the live aisle.
Cycle Counting & Problem-Solving
During a shift, you might be assigned a cycle count on a specific aisle to verify system accuracy against physical stock. This requires meticulous attention. You may also encounter discrepancies—a missing pallet or a mislabelled product. You'll log these in the WMS and notify the team lead, helping to maintain the integrity of millions of pounds of inventory.
Career Progression Pathways from This Role
Starting as a Stock Replenishment Assistant is a strategic move for building a logistics career. The skills you master here are foundational. Here’s how successful individuals have progressed within 12-18 months:
1. Technical Specialist
Excel in the WMS and become the go-to person for inventory accuracy. Progress to a Stock Controller or Inventory Analyst role, responsible for managing stock levels, forecasting, and coordinating stock takes.
2. Team Leadership
Demonstrate reliability and initiative to move into a Team Leader or Shift Supervisor position. This involves overseeing a small team of operatives, coordinating break schedules, and ensuring daily targets are met safely.
3. Machinery Operation
Many employers offer fully funded FLT (Forklift Truck) training to promising staff. Gaining a counterbalance or reach truck licence can increase your pay rate significantly and open doors to specialist FLT Driver roles.
The Staff Direct Advantage: Beyond the Pay Slip
We provide more than just access to jobs. Our support system is designed to help you thrive in your role and plan your next career move.
Your Dedicated Consultant & Our Support Promise
From the moment you apply, you are assigned a named consultant who understands the logistics sector. Their role is multifaceted:
- Pre-Start Guidance: They prepare you for the client interview, advise on documentation, and ensure you know exactly what to expect on day one.
- Weekly Welfare Checks: Your consultant will call you regularly to ensure you're settling in, address any site issues, and confirm your hours for accurate weekly pay.
- Career Development Conversations: After a few months, they’ll discuss your long-term goals. Want to move into a supervisory role or gain a forklift licence? They can advocate for you with the client or guide you to relevant training opportunities.
This level of support is why many of our temporary workers choose to stay with Staff Direct for years, moving between different assignments and clients as their career evolves. We invest in your success because when you succeed, our clients succeed.
