This is more than just a job; it's a career opportunity. The employer is known for investing in its workforce, and for the right candidate, this temporary role has a clear pathway to a permanent position. You'll be working on a significant local project that contributes to the growth and connectivity of the West Midlands. Whether you're an experienced operator looking for a new challenge or a skilled professional seeking stability after a period of temporary jobs, this role provides the platform to demonstrate your expertise. We also have a wide range of other job opportunities in the UK across various sectors, but this specific Plant Operator vacancy is one of our most urgent and rewarding placements.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties
As the Plant Operator, you will be entrusted with critical machinery and tasks. Your primary focus will be on safety, precision, and productivity. You will work closely with site supervisors, Groundworkers, and other construction professionals to ensure the seamless progression of work.
- Safely and competently operating a range of plant machinery, which may include excavators, dumpers, rollers, telehandlers, and loading shovels, in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and site safety protocols.
- Conducting daily pre-start checks and basic maintenance (e.g., fluid levels, tyre pressure, safety features) on all assigned equipment, reporting any defects or issues immediately to the site supervisor.
- Precisely executing digging, grading, levelling, and lifting tasks as directed by site plans and verbal instructions, ensuring minimal rework and maximum efficiency.
- Adhering strictly to all health, safety, and environmental regulations, including wearing correct PPE, maintaining clear communication via radio, and ensuring safe zones around operating machinery.
- Assisting with general site duties when not operating plant, which could include supporting HGV Drivers (Class 1 / Class 2) during unloading, helping Groundworkers, or keeping the plant and work area clean and tidy.
What We're Looking For: Essential & Desirable Criteria
To be successful in this Plant Operator role, you will need a combination of formal qualifications, practical experience, and the right attitude. We value reliability and a strong work ethic above all.
- Essential: A valid CPCS or NPORS card for the relevant plant categories (e.g., Excavator 360, Dumper, Roller). Evidence of formal training is non-negotiable.
- Essential: Proven experience as a Plant Operator, preferably within a construction, civil engineering, or airport infrastructure environment. References will be required.
- Essential: A relentless commitment to health and safety. You must have a valid CSCS card and a thorough understanding of risk assessments and method statements.
- Highly Desirable: Experience working on projects in the Birmingham area, familiarity with airport ground operations, and any additional licenses (e.g., Telehandler, HGV Class 2). A flexible approach to shift patterns, including potential early starts or weekend work, is also beneficial.

Frequently Asked Questions
What specific plant machinery will I be operating?
The primary machinery will be determined by the project phase and your specific competencies. It typically includes 360 excavators, dumpers, and rollers. During registration, we will match your certified competencies (shown on your CPCS/NPORS card) with the client's immediate needs. If you are a multi-skilled operator, that is a significant advantage.
How quickly can I start after applying?
For candidates with all documents in order (valid cards, right to work, etc.), we aim for a start within 24-72 hours of application. The process is designed for speed because our clients need staff urgently. This is why we specialise in immediate start job vacancies across the UK.
Is there public transport to the Birmingham Airport B26 site?
The site is well-served by public transport, with several bus routes connecting to Birmingham Airport and nearby train stations like Birmingham International. However, due to early starts or shift finishes, having your own transport is often highly recommended. Please discuss your specific situation with your consultant.
What is the difference between temp and temp-to-perm?
A temporary role has a fixed end date or is ongoing but with no permanent guarantee. A temp-to-perm role is initially temporary but includes a mutual agreement that if both you and the employer are happy after a trial period (e.g., 12 weeks), you will be offered a permanent contract. This role is advertised as having strong temp-to-perm potential.
Do you offer other types of work besides plant operation?
Absolutely. StaffDirect is a full-service staff recruitment agency. We place people in warehouse jobs, cleaning roles, hospitality, driving (HGV, Van Driver), and many other sectors. Registering with us opens doors to a wide variety of job seeker opportunities.
My CPCS card is due for renewal soon. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can apply. However, you must have a valid, in-date card to start work on site. If your renewal is imminent, we advise you to begin the process immediately. We may be able to put you forward for the role contingent on successful renewal. Please be upfront about your card's expiry date during our initial conversation.
