A Day in the Life of a Preston HGV Technician
To give you a true sense of the role, let's walk through a typical day for our technicians in the Preston PR1 workshop. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and focused on precision. You'll be working on a diverse fleet, from 18-tonne rigids on daily delivery schedules to 44-tonne articulated lorries preparing for long-haul journeys.
Morning (7:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
- Briefing & Allocation: Start with a team briefing. The workshop supervisor assigns vehicles, prioritising any overnight breakdowns or vehicles flagged for Pre-MOT inspection.
- Diagnostic Work: Hook up diagnostic laptops to a vehicle reporting an AdBlue fault or engine management light. Use your skills to trace the issue—be it a faulty NOx sensor or a blocked injector.
- Routine Servicing: Conduct a full service on a rigid truck, including oil/filter changes, brake checks, and tyre inspections. All work is meticulously logged on the digital job card system.
Afternoon (1:00 PM - 5:30 PM)
- Brake System Overhaul: Tackle a planned maintenance task: stripping and rebuilding a tractor unit's tandem axle braking system, replacing worn pads, discs, and re-sealing callipers.
- Fabrication & Repair: Use the workshop's MIG welder to repair a damaged cargo deck support on a flatbed trailer, ensuring it meets strength and safety standards.
- Quality Sign-off: Perform a final check and road test on the vehicle diagnosed in the morning. Update the maintenance history and sign off the job as complete.
This variety ensures no two days are the same, providing continuous learning and challenge. The Preston workshop is equipped with modern tools, including vehicle lifts, diagnostic stations for major brands (Mercedes, DAF, Volvo), and a supportive team environment where knowledge sharing is encouraged.

Navigating the Recruitment Process: Your Questions Answered
We understand that applying for a new role can bring questions. Beyond the FAQs, here’s a deeper dive into the specifics of the process with Staff Direct, designed for transparency and to set you up for success.
What does the"swift registration" involve?
Our compliance team prioritises speed without cutting corners. After your initial application, you'll be asked to provide:
- Proof of Right to Work: A passport, birth certificate, or settled status share code.
- Proof of Address: A recent utility bill or bank statement.
- Qualification Certificates: Digital copies of your NVQ, City & Guilds, or other relevant cards.
- References: Details for 2 professional referees, which we verify promptly.
What is the interview with the client like?
The client interview is typically practical and conversational. They want to gauge your hands-on experience and team fit. Be prepared to:
- Discuss specific repairs you've undertaken (e.g.,"Talk me through diagnosing and fixing a complex air brake fault").
- Explain your approach to health and safety in a busy workshop.
- Demonstrate your knowledge of current DVSA standards for vehicle roadworthiness.
- Ask your own questions about the workshop culture, typical fleet, and tools provided.
What tools and PPE are provided?
Most workshops in Preston we partner with operate a"tooling policy" where the company provides all major workshop equipment (lifts, diagnostic tools, welding gear, heavy-duty tools). As a technician, you are generally expected to provide your own personal hand tool kit (spanners, sockets, screwdrivers, etc.) and basic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like safety boots. The employer will supply specialist PPE (e.g., high-vis clothing, respirators for specific tasks, hearing protection). We clarify this specific policy with the client before your interview.
How does weekly pay with an agency work?
As a Staff Direct temporary worker, you are employed by us and paid by us. You submit your timesheet (electronically or via our app) at the end of each week. Once approved by the workshop supervisor, our accounts team processes payment. Funds are typically in your bank account every Friday. You will receive a clear payslip detailing your hours, hourly rate, holiday pay accrual, and any deductions. Our finance team is always available to answer any pay-related queries promptly.

Every technician's background is unique. Whether you're recently qualified, returning to the industry, or have specific questions about licences or certifications, our specialist transport recruiter is here to give you honest, tailored advice before you apply.
