Warehouse Supervisor Job Description

Our client, a leading logistics and distribution company with a major operation in Romford RM1, is seeking an experienced Warehouse Supervisor to oversee daily operations. This role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth, efficient, and safe running of a busy warehouse environment, managing a team of operatives, and maintaining high standards of productivity and accuracy. The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader, adept at problem-solving and motivated by targets.

By applying through StaffDirect, you gain direct access to this exclusive opportunity and the support of a dedicated consultant who understands the local Romford market. We specialise in connecting talented professionals with reputable employers, offering a streamlined process from application to start date. Whether you're looking for an immediate start to bridge a gap or a solid step in your warehousing career, this role represents a significant opportunity.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

As the Warehouse Supervisor, you will be the operational linchpin, responsible for a wide range of critical tasks to ensure the warehouse meets its daily targets and service level agreements (SLAs).

  • Team Leadership & Daily Management: Directly supervise a team of warehouse operatives, pickers, and packers. Allocate tasks, conduct briefings, monitor performance, and provide coaching and feedback to ensure a high-performing team.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to all health, safety, and environmental regulations. Conduct regular safety briefings, risk assessments, and ensure all equipment (like forklifts) is used safely and by certified personnel. Maintain impeccable housekeeping standards.
  • Inventory & Stock Control: Oversee all inbound and outbound logistics processes. Ensure accurate receiving, put-away, picking, packing, and dispatch of goods. Manage cycle counts and support full stocktakes to maintain inventory accuracy above 99.8%.
  • Operational Efficiency & KPI Reporting: Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as order accuracy, lines picked per hour, and dispatch timelines. Identify bottlenecks, implement process improvements, and report daily/weekly performance to the Warehouse Manager.
  • Customer & Carrier Liaison: Act as a point of contact for delivery drivers and carriers. Coordinate loading/unloading schedules, resolve any shipping or receiving discrepancies promptly, and ensure excellent service for both internal and external customers.
  • Administration & Systems Use: Utilise Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and RF scanners to manage workflows. Complete necessary paperwork and digital records for shipments, returns, and incidents accurately and in a timely manner.

This role requires a proactive individual who can think on their feet. For example, when a last-minute priority order comes in, you'll need to reorganise the shift plan swiftly without disrupting the rest of the day's schedule. Similarly, if a piece of MHE (Material Handling Equipment) goes down, you must have contingency plans to keep operations moving.

Essential Skills & Candidate Requirements

To be successful in this Warehouse Supervisor role in Romford RM1, you will need to demonstrate a blend of practical experience, soft skills, and relevant qualifications.

  • Proven Supervisory Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years in a warehouse team leader, supervisor, or similar leadership role within a fast-paced logistics, distribution, or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth Warehousing Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of warehouse processes – from goods-in to dispatch – including pick/pack methods, stock rotation (FIFO/FEFO), and reverse logistics.
  • Health & Safety Certification: A strong, demonstrable commitment to H&S. IOSH Managing Safely or similar certification is highly desirable, as is experience conducting tool-box talks and risk assessments.
  • IT & Systems Proficiency: Confident user of WMS systems, Microsoft Office (especially Excel for reporting), and handheld RF scanning technology.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, confidently, and professionally with team members, management, and external partners. Must be able to give clear instructions and provide constructive feedback.
  • Problem-Solving & Initiative: A natural problem-solver who can remain calm under pressure, make decisive decisions, and implement effective solutions to operational challenges.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work shifts as required, which may include early starts, late finishes, and occasional weekend work during peak periods.

Desirable (But Not Essential) Qualifications:

A Counterbalance or Reach Truck forklift licence is a significant advantage, as is any further training in logistics management (e.g., CILT qualifications). Experience with specific WMS like SAP, Oracle, or Manhattan is also beneficial.
