Absolutely. Goods-in and Despatch are two sides of the same coin in warehouse logistics. The core skills—attention to detail, working to procedures, manual handling, and using warehouse systems—are highly transferable. We value candidates with any solid warehouse experience. Your Goods-in background gives you a strong understanding of stock flow, which is a major asset in a despatch role where accuracy is paramount.

The primary shift is Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with a 30-minute unpaid break. However, there is a requirement for flexibility. During peak periods (e.g., pre-Christmas, Black Friday), overtime may be available, including early starts from 6:00 am and occasional Saturday morning work (paid at an enhanced rate). We discuss all shift expectations in detail during the registration process to ensure they match your availability.

While our Watford branch specialises in logistics, industrial, and commercial staffing, Staff Direct as a group has a diverse portfolio. We occasionally place specialist roles, including IT Contractor positions, through our dedicated desks. The initial placement is for a 12-week temporary period. This serves as a prolonged working interview for both you and the client. Assuming performance is strong, attendance is good, and you're a good cultural fit, the client will typically offer a permanent contract directly with them at the end of the 12 weeks (sometimes sooner). A Day in the Life: Despatch Operative, Watford WD17

To truly understand the role, let's walk through a typical shift. This isn't just moving boxes; it's a coordinated, technology-driven process where you are a key player.

🕗

6:45 AM - Start

Safety briefing & shift plan review. Check MHE (if licensed) and receive priority dispatch list for the day.

Coordinating with drivers, you safely load outbound vehicles, checking seals and paperwork to ensure 100% accuracy before departure.

The Technology You'll Master

Modern logistics is driven by technology. In this role, you won't just be working manually; you'll become proficient with industry-standard systems that make you more employable.

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS): Hands-on experience with scanner-led picking and put-away, inventory checks, and live data entry.

Understanding Your Pay Options: PAYE vs. Umbrella

We offer flexibility in how you are paid. It's important to choose the right model for your circumstances. Our consultants will guide you through this.

👔

PAYE (Pay As You Earn)

The Standard Choice
  • Simplicity: You are an employee of Staff Direct. Tax and NI are deducted at source.
  • Security: No need for separate insurance or accounting. All statutory rights (holiday pay, SSP) are managed for you.
  • Consideration: Generally results in a lower gross pay compared to Umbrella, but with far fewer admin responsibilities.

Best for: Individuals who want a straightforward, hassle-free payment method with no extra paperwork.

🏢

Umbrella Company

For Flexible Workers
  • Potential Higher Net Pay: You may be able to claim certain limited business expenses, subject to HMRC rules.
  • Continuity: Useful if you work for multiple agencies or contracts, as all earnings are consolidated.
  • Consideration: Involves choosing a reputable umbrella company and paying a weekly/monthly margin fee. You are responsible for understanding your tax position.

Best for: Seasoned temporary workers who understand the model and may work through multiple assignments annually.

Our Advice: During your registration, our payroll team will provide a clear, personalised Key Information Document (KID) for each option, so you can make a fully informed choice. We work with several accredited umbrella partners if you wish to explore that route.

Beyond the Role: Training & Career Upskilling

Staff Direct and our client partners are invested in your development. Excelling in this despatch role can unlock sponsored training opportunities.

🏅

FLT Licence Training

Prove yourself reliable and safety-conscious, and you could be put forward for fully-funded Counterbalance or Reach Truck training. This qualification can add £1.50-£2.50+ to your hourly rate.

*Subject to performance and client requirements.
📊

WMS & Systems Mastery

Deepen your expertise in specific Warehouse Management Systems. This specialised knowledge is highly valued and can lead to roles in inventory control, data accuracy, or shift planning.

👨‍🏫

Mentoring & Leadership

Show initiative and you may be asked to help onboard new temporary staff. This informal leadership is the first step towards team leader or supervisor positions, both internally and with other local employers.
