Many of our temporary cleaners have progressed into permanent Supervisor or Team Leader roles, managing small teams on larger contracts. Others have specialised in areas like Window Cleaning, Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, or Biohazard Decontamination, where certified training can lead to higher pay rates. We actively encourage and can sometimes facilitate access to relevant training courses for long-term temporary workers.
For those interested in the operational side, experience gained on the ground is excellent preparation for roles in Facilities Management Coordination or Contract Management. We have seen numerous candidates use their hands-on experience to move into office-based positions with our client companies, overseeing cleaning contracts and service level agreements.

A Closer Look: Edinburgh EH2 Client Environments
Working in Edinburgh's EH2 postcode, which covers the historic and bustling city centre, offers a unique and varied working environment. Understanding these settings can help you prepare for your assignment.
🏛️ Historic & Corporate Offices
Many assignments are within Georgian townhouses and modern commercial blocks housing legal, financial, and professional service firms. Cleaning standards are exceptionally high, with a focus on discretion, detail (like polishing brass and wood), and working around sensitive business hours.
🛍️ High-Street Retail & Hospitality
Cleaning roles in premium retail stores, hotel lobbies, and restaurant kitchens require speed, efficiency, and the ability to handle high volumes of foot traffic. Early morning or late-night shifts are common to clean before opening or after closing.
The Cleaner's Toolkit: Equipment You'll Master
Beyond basic supplies, professional cleaning in commercial settings involves a range of equipment. Familiarity with these is an asset, and training is always provided.
- Automatic Floor Scrubbers: Used in large atrium areas, shopping centres, and hospital corridors. You'll learn to operate these ride-on or walk-behind machines for efficient, large-scale floor care.
- High-Reach Systems: For cleaning windows, light fixtures, and high ceilings in multi-story atriums or public buildings. Training on safe use of ladders, podium steps, and water-fed pole systems is provided.
- Industrial Extraction Vacuums: These are crucial for deep cleaning carpets in offices and hotels, removing embedded dirt and allergens. You may also learn to use associated tools like crevice tools and upholstery attachments.
- Microfibre Technology & Colour-Coding: Most clients now use advanced microfibre systems with strict colour-coding (e.g., red for toilets, blue for general surfaces) to prevent cross-contamination. Understanding this system is a key part of modern cleaning protocols.
- Chemical Dosing Systems: To ensure safety and correct dilution, many sites use wall-mounted dosing systems for cleaning chemicals. You'll be trained on which product to use for which task, from glass cleaning to heavy-duty degreasing.
Candidate Success: From Temp to Team Leader
"I started with StaffDirect on a temporary evening cleaning contract for an office in the city centre. I was reliable, and when the site supervisor role came up, my consultant put me forward. I’ve now been here for two years, managing a team of five. The weekly pay kept me going at the start, and the chance to prove myself led to a permanent career."

- Prepare for a Quick Interview: Our consultant calls are informal but vital. Be ready to discuss your experience, why you want the role, and your immediate start capability.
- Ask Informed Questions: Ask about the client type, shift length, team size, and uniform/PPE provision. It shows professionalism and helps you decide.
- Submit a Neat CV: Ensure your CV is up-to-date, error-free, and includes any relevant training (like COSHH). A clean CV reflects a clean worker's mindset.
