Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about becoming Event Waiting Staff in Canary Wharf? We've got answers.
What experience do I really need to apply?
While 6+ months of specific event or restaurant waiting experience is ideal, we value transferable skills highly. If you have experience in customer-facing roles like retail, Teaching Assistant (especially SEN roles which require patience and clear communication), or even volunteering that involved serving or coordinating people, you may have the core skills we need.
We provide briefing for every event, so a keen willingness to learn and a professional attitude can sometimes outweigh direct experience. We assess each candidate individually. For those with no experience but a strong desire to enter the hospitality sector, we can sometimes recommend entry-level runner or setup roles to build your experience.
How quickly can I start working after applying?
For candidates with all documents ready and who pass a swift interview, it is possible to be placed on a shift within 48-72 hours. The typical process is:
- Day 1: Apply online/phone call → Initial screening call.
- Day 2: Quick registration interview (in-person or video) & submission of right-to-work documents.
- Day 3: Compliance checks completed → You are added to our active worker list and start receiving shift offers.
Urgent events sometimes require staff within 24 hours. If you have full availability and your documents are in order, make this clear to your consultant. Our reputation is built on speed, as seen with our immediate start processes across the UK.
Are the shifts regular or ad-hoc?
It's a mix, which provides great flexibility. Canary Wharf has a core of regular corporate events (weekly board meetings, breakfast briefings) which can lead to a consistent weekly schedule for reliable staff. It also has a high volume of one-off ad-hoc events: product launches, summer parties, annual galas, and conferences.
We recommend being as flexible as possible when you start to build your reputation with multiple clients. As you become a trusted face, you'll often be requested directly by event managers, leading to more regular work. This model is similar to how we supply Warehouse Operative roles – a blend of ongoing contracts and peak-season temporary work.
What should I wear to an event?
For over 90% of events, the standard uniform is smart black trousers or a black skirt (knee-length or longer), a plain white shirt/blouse (tucked in), and comfortable, polished black shoes (no trainers, open toes, or high heels that hinder movement). A black tie or bow tie is often provided on-site.
Your consultant will always confirm the dress code when offering a shift. Some high-end events may require specific attire (e.g., white gloves, waistcoats) which the client supplies. It's always best to have the basic black/white outfit ready. Good personal grooming (neat hair, minimal jewellery, clean nails) is as important as the clothes.
Can I work if I live outside Canary Wharf?
Absolutely. Many of our successful Event Waiting Staff commute from surrounding areas like Greenwich, Stratford, Poplar, Isle of Dogs, Docklands, and even from further afield in East and South London. The excellent Jubilee Line and DLR connections make Canary Wharf easily accessible.
We just ask that you are realistic about travel times and can commit to arriving punctually, especially for early morning setup shifts. If you're based further out, you might want to consider the higher-paying late shifts where travel disruption is less impactful. Staff Direct also has roles in other parts of London; registering with us can open doors to events in Westminster, The City, and elsewhere.
How does payment work?
We operate a simple, transparent weekly PAYE payroll:
- Timesheets: You submit your hours electronically via our portal or app after each shift.
- Approval: The client confirms the hours worked.
- Payday: Every Friday, for all hours worked and approved in the preceding week (Sunday to Saturday).
- Method: Payment is made directly into your UK bank account via BACS.
- Payslip: A detailed digital payslip is available each week, showing your gross pay, deductions (tax, NI), and accrued holiday pay.
There are no umbrella company complexities or hidden fees. Your rate is the rate you earn, with holiday pay accrued on top. This reliable system is used across all our roles, from Event Waiting Staff to Forklift Drivers and Warehouse Operatives.
More questions? Call our friendly team on 020 3627 5550.
