Steel Fixer Job Description
StaffDirect is partnering with a leading national contractor to recruit a skilled and reliable Steel Fixer for a significant infrastructure project in the heart of Bradford BD4. This role is critical to the project's structural phase, involving the assembly and installation of steel reinforcement (rebar) for concrete structures. If you have proven experience reading engineering drawings, working safely at height, and delivering precise work to tight deadlines, we want to hear from you.
As a trusted local recruitment agency with deep roots in Bradford and across Yorkshire, StaffDirect specialises in connecting talented tradespeople with top-tier employers. We understand the local construction landscape and the demand for skilled CSCS Labourers and specialised trades. This isn't just a one-off job; successful candidates will gain access to our extensive network of construction projects across West Yorkshire, offering ongoing work and career progression. For those exploring different avenues, we also have opportunities in sectors from warehouse logistics to specialised roles like healthcare.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties
- Interpretation & Planning: Accurately read and interpret engineering drawings, schedules, and bending schedules to determine the quantity, size, and shape of reinforcement bars (rebar) required.
- Fabrication & Preparation: Measure, cut, bend, and fabricate steel reinforcement using hand tools, power tools, and hydraulic bending equipment, ensuring all materials meet precise specifications.
- Installation & Fixing: Assemble and securely fix prepared steel reinforcement into shutters and formwork for concrete pours. This includes tying rebar with wire, using spacers and chairs to maintain correct positioning, and ensuring all laps and couplers are installed correctly.
- Teamwork & Coordination: Work collaboratively with other Steel Fixers, general labourers, crane operatives, and site managers to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to the construction programme.
- Quality & Safety Compliance: Conduct thorough checks on your own work and that of assistants to ensure it aligns with drawings and industry standards (e.g., BS 8666). Maintain the highest standards of health and safety, including working safely at height, in excavations, and around plant machinery. A valid CSCS card is non-negotiable.
- Material Handling & Housekeeping: Safely unload, store, and handle reinforcement materials. Maintain a clean, tidy, and hazard-free work area, contributing to overall site safety and efficiency.
Essential Requirements & Qualifications
- Proven Experience: Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience as a Steel Fixer on UK construction sites, with verifiable references.
- Mandatory Certification: A valid, in-date CSCS Labourer or CSCS Skilled Worker card is essential. A CPCS or NPORS ticket for plant related to steel fixing is a significant advantage.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading complex structural drawings and bending schedules. Competence in using all relevant hand and power tools (e.g., rebar tiers, bolt croppers, bar benders).
- Physical Fitness & Attitude: The role is physically demanding, requiring lifting, bending, and working in all weather conditions. You must be reliable, punctual, have a strong work ethic, and a proactive commitment to safety.
- Team Player: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team, often mentoring CSCS Labourers or apprentices.
- Right to Work: Must have full, unrestricted right to work in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions (Steel Fixer Jobs)
What specific type of CSCS card do I need for this Steel Fixer role?
You will need at minimum a CSCS Labourer Card (Green), obtained by passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. However, preference is given to candidates with a CSCS Skilled Worker Card (Blue), which requires an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Steel Fixing or Reinforcement. If you hold a Gold Supervisor or Black Manager card, that is also acceptable. Your card must be physically present and in-date on your first day. For guidance on obtaining a card, our candidate resources can help.
Is this role purely temporary, or is there a permanent opportunity?
This position is initially offered as a temporary contract through StaffDirect, which provides flexibility and weekly pay. However, the client has a strong history of offering temp-to-perm contracts to reliable, skilled workers who integrate well into the team. This is a long-term project, so the opportunity for ongoing work is significant. Many of our tradespeople start on a temp basis and transition to direct employment. Learn more about this pathway in our article on navigating jobs through temp agencies.
What PPE is required, and do I need to supply my own?
You are expected to provide your own basic PPE as a professional tradesperson. This includes safety boots (with midsole protection), hi-vis clothing, hard hat, and gloves. Site-specific PPE (e.g., harnesses for working at height, hearing protection for certain tasks) will be provided by the principal contractor. All PPE must be in good condition and comply with relevant standards (EN ISO 20345 for boots, etc.). Our consultant will provide a definitive list upon successful application.
I live outside Bradford BD4. Is travel pay or accommodation provided?
The pay rate offered is intended to be competitive within the local Bradford and West Yorkshire market. Travel expenses or accommodation are not typically provided for this role. We encourage applicants from surrounding areas like Leeds, Halifax, or Keighley who can commute reliably. For roles where accommodation is part of the package, such as some national projects, it will be explicitly stated in the job description.
Does StaffDirect have other construction or trades jobs in Yorkshire?
Absolutely. As a leading temporary staffing agency with a national reach, we constantly recruit for a wide range of construction roles across Yorkshire. This includes CSCS Labourers, Groundworkers, Forklift Operators, Joiners, and Supervisors.
