Transport Planner Job Description
Our client, a prominent logistics and distribution company with a major hub in the Birmingham B40 area, requires a skilled and proactive Transport Planner to join their busy operations team. This role is central to ensuring the efficient, cost-effective, and timely movement of goods across the UK, making you a key player in their supply chain success. The B40 location, with its excellent links to the M6, M42, and national rail networks, is a logistics powerhouse, and this position offers a fantastic opportunity to work at its heart.
By applying through StaffDirect's specialist recruitment and staffing service, you gain direct access to this urgent vacancy without the hassle of generic job boards. We prioritise matching skilled professionals like Van Drivers, warehouse operatives, and planners with businesses that value their expertise. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys problem-solving, and is looking for a position with genuine long-term potential in the West Midlands.

Role Details
As the Transport Planner, you will be the linchpin of the daily transport schedule. Your analytical skills and attention to detail will ensure resources are used optimally, costs are controlled, and customer delivery windows are met consistently.
- Plan and optimise daily delivery routes and schedules for a mixed fleet, including HGVs and vans, using industry-standard planning software (e.g., Paragon, Mandata, Transpoco).
- Allocate drivers and vehicles efficiently, considering driver hours (WTD/Tachograph regulations), vehicle capacity, and geographical constraints to maximise load consolidation and minimise empty running.
- Act as the primary point of contact for drivers on the road, providing real-time support, managing delays, and communicating effectively with the customer service team regarding any delivery issues.
- Monitor transport KPIs, such as on-time delivery, fuel consumption, and fleet utilisation, producing regular reports and suggesting improvements to operational processes.
- Liaise with warehouse teams in Birmingham (similar to roles we fill for warehouse jobs in Leicester) to ensure timely loading and alignment of outbound schedules with inbound goods.
- Manage subcontractor relationships for overflow work and ensure all transport activities comply with health & safety and O-licence requirements.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with proven experience in a transport office. We value practical knowledge and a can-do attitude as much as formal qualifications.
- Proven experience as a Transport Planner, Dispatch Coordinator, or in a similar logistics role is essential. Experience within the Birmingham or West Midlands logistics sector is a significant advantage.
- Strong understanding of UK driver hours (WTD) and EU tachograph rules, along with a working knowledge of O-licence regulations.
- High proficiency with transport planning software and Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure and make quick, effective decisions – a skill equally valued in our receptionist jobs in Leeds.
- A full UK driving licence is preferred, though not essential.
We believe in rewarding talent and offering a package that supports your career and well-being. This role comes with a comprehensive benefits structure designed for logistics professionals.
- Competitive hourly rate of £14 - £18 per hour, paid weekly via StaffDirect. Overtime may be available at enhanced rates.
- Immediate start following a swift registration and interview process with our local consultants.
- Temp-to-perm pathway: Outstanding performance during the temporary period can lead directly to a permanent contract with the end client, including potential benefits like pension schemes and increased holiday allowance.
- Working hours are typically Monday-Friday, with shift patterns available (e.g., 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm) to suit different lifestyles.
- Access to ongoing training and support from your dedicated StaffDirect consultant, who understands the local Birmingham B40 job market inside out.
